Blogging!

November 24th, 2005 admin No comments

Whenever I mention our bLOG to anyone, the reaction is always the same: “what’s a blog?” I forsee a time in the not-too-distant future when the word ‘blog’ is as common-place in our everyday online lives as ‘google’ is now.

If you have the inclination to try ‘blogging’, have a search for some of the many sites that will help you give it a go e.g. blogger.com. If you’re a little more knowledgeable and have your own web hosting, have a look at Wordpress. It’s a superb open-source solution and what I’ve used to create this one. If you find something different that you recommend, post the link in a comment together with your thoughts. -AT

Pet Portrait

November 20th, 2005 admin No comments

Jasmine is now 18 months old and is only just starting to show signs of calming down. She’s been photographed so much that you only have to point a camera at her and she flops down looking completely bored. This was just a quick grab with the 20D and 100mm F2.8 macro. It’s a great portrait lense for both people and dogs! -AT

Is your PC protected?

November 18th, 2005 admin No comments

As the title says: “Is your PC protected?”. At the very least, Anti-virus, Firewall and Spyware applications should be installed and kept up-to-date. What do I use? AVG Free Edition Antivirus, Zone Alarm (Free) Firewall and Spybot S&D (free).

With some common-sense and this combination of completely free software, you can be safer than ‘most’ online . There shouldn’t be any excuses eh? :) -AT

bLOG live!

November 16th, 2005 admin No comments

After much testing, I’ve decided to go live with our bLOG. It’s very much in its infancy at the moment and there is still a lot of work to do with it. In particular, the links column needs sorting out – a lot more will be added to it! For now, what you’re seeing is effectively a beta and many of the problems that I know exist with it, are behind the scenes and don’t really impact on the reader; I’ll be fixing these as I go, but enough of it works to warrant using it.
Feel free to press the buttons and post comments – although to prevent being spammed by undesirables – the first comment that you make will be moderated.
Any thoughts about the look and feel of the bLOG are welcomed :) -AT

Cheap phone deals do work…

November 15th, 2005 admin No comments

All credit to John Lazarus, who in a quest to cut his astronomical phone bill down, (“Gill can talk!” he said) stumbled onto 1899.com. They’re well worth using – my own bill down by 60% this quarter. For UK calls to landlines, you pay 3p – NOT per minute – just 3p! It’s valid anytime of day or night and you can yatter away for hours at a time without having to reconnect. Billing is monthly direct debit and if fully itemised. Now I pay line rental to BT and the odd call charge (when I forget to use 1899) and a couple of £ each month goes to 1899 to pay my bill. Somewhat of a sceptic, I was slow to change and now I’m kicking myself at how much it has cost me over the last year! -AT
